Space and Built Form

3D printing is a revolutionary tool for designers in architecture, interior, exhibition and other space enclosing designs. Architects and exhibition designers traditionally build their own models with cardboards in order to explore possibilities in three dimensional terms. The same process applies to interior designers when they have to tackle complex spaces, or tricky shape like a sweeping staircase, curved ceiling or any organic forms. With the advantages of 3D printing technology, designers can enter their existing computer data to cubify their designs for studies as well as formal presentation. Without steep learning curve, this can be achieved with an extension of computer skills and the rest will be taken care of by the machine.

Vehicle to challenge

Apart from model-making in the conventional sense, 3D printers can be given the task of “void” constructions. Through the extrusion of floor, ceiling and partition walls, volumetric relationship can be molded in real space. This allows designers to examine the spaces they are creating at any angle and under real light. It corrects the often gaudy if not false impressions of virtual realities through computer graphics. This is especially commendable during design stage when designers need to spot problem areas.

Confidence building

For exhibition and stage designs, precision guaranteed models help identify vistas, or correct sight-lines all man-made models are incapable of. This technology surpasses three dimensional graphics let alone traditional model-maker in terms of time and accuracy. One may even argue that clients would show more confidence towards designers by approving quality 3D models. The truth in there is no fudging!

Open sourcing

As designers are getting more relied on technology to realize their visions, software companies have devised user-friendly interface systems in order that 3D printing can be more accessible. Drafting software like 3D Studio, Rhino, VectorWorks etc have compatible interfaces to print out high-resolution models. Some of the leading giants such as Autodesk even provide open platform of free licenses. For spatial designers, it can be foreseen that 3D printers will be readily available in-house, just like a multi-function copier in an office nowadays.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Drawing, 3D modelling program, 3D design software – allows user to draw, create, modify, and analyze a 3D model design and export drawn file as STL format that is readable by Slicer & Control Software for further procedures. Many freeware and payware 3D design software can be found online.

    During our workshops, Well Link professionals introduce participants to 3D printing technology and demonstrate the processes of 3D drawing & printing. The goal of the workshop is to raise students’ interest in 3D printing through different activities and interactive tasks.
